“The Hudson was once a much larger river than it now is, and the character of its past is evident in its surroundings as well as in its own great breadth and depth. Much of the Hudson valley is that of an ice-age river within which the smaller, newer Hudson has cut its channel; the bed of the river is below sea level for almost half its total length. In this long and remarkably straight part of its course, unencumbered by falls or rapids, the waters of the Hudson drop very slowly south, not steadily, but in an intricate push of water against the tides, which twice daily reverse the flow of the river for many miles and slow it and raise its level as far north as Troy, one hundred seventy miles from its mouth. This slow, reversing current, along with its depths, give the Hudson the qualities of a fiord. The Mohawks called the Hudson ‘Oiogue,’ meaning the beautiful river, and a river’s beauty is in its setting. The Hudson flows out of old mountains as picturesquely jumbled as any in the East, then flows through spacious, fertile valleys, first dammed and locked, then free and island-studded. Distant mountains and long embracing bluffs adorn its middle passages. Steep, beetling mountains press close, then fall away as the wide Tappan Zee swells out below them. Finally the Hudson’s unique palisades of rock follow down to the great harbors with their many interlocking straits and peninsulas.

The Hudson River is a great river first by the grace of nature.”
